"I worked hard, but work dried up, and I couldn't keep up with the rent. It's not just the rent, it's the taxes, the bills... it's everything," Dave explains, his voice filled with frustration.
And this is the part most people miss: despite the challenges, van dwellers like Dave and Jack find small comforts. Dave's camper van is his sanctuary, with an elevated bed and plans for wood panelling. Even in the harsh winter, he finds solace in his makeshift home, preparing roast lamb and Brussels sprouts with a touch of Waitrose sea salt.
In Bristol and Brighton, tensions rise as local residents express anger towards van dwellers. Neil, a homeowner, describes the situation as an eyesore, with vans parked near a primary school playing field. He points to a van with a generator, running loudly day and night, and claims to have found bags of human waste on the football pitch.
"It's been reported to the council, but they're not doing enough. It's frustrating," Neil says, his voice filled with concern.
Brighton and Hove Council, however, states they are taking action, working to support van dwellers and find suitable accommodation. But as Steve Brown puts it, finding a new home is incredibly difficult due to housing shortages and estate agent demands.
"If you don't agree with my choice to live in a van, then offer a solution. Write a cheque, buy us land, or donate a house. It's that simple," Steve says, his voice firm with determination.
