BREAKING NEWS: A significant twist emerges in the ongoing Haas saga as the Broncos encounter a new challenge from a rival NRL team.
Recent reports indicate that Payne Haas is expected to ink a one-year contract extension upon his return from the Broncos’ overseas trip for the World Club Challenge. However, Brisbane’s management is now facing renewed concerns as it appears that Haas may be considering a move to the newly established 19th NRL franchise, the Papua New Guinea Chiefs.
According to sources at Code Sports, officials from the Broncos are set to meet with Haas to finalize the details of his new extension, which is projected to keep him with the team until the conclusion of the 2027 season.
But here’s where it gets controversial: the entry of PNG into the league in 2028 could pose a significant threat to the Broncos' hopes of retaining one of the game’s top front-row talents. Haas has been the subject of considerable interest from the rebel rugby league organization R360, which had proposed a lucrative contract to lure him away from the NRL, given that he is viewed as one of the best players in his position.
Nonetheless, with R360’s launch being pushed back to 2028, there is a real possibility that the PNG franchise will attempt to entice Haas away from Red Hill sooner than anticipated. Interestingly, Haas seems to prefer staying within the NRL, making a switch to R360 appear less likely.
Brisbane’s chairman, Karl Morris, is eager to gain clarity on Haas’ intentions for his future in the sport. Reports suggest that Haas’ management has negotiated a 12-month extension, which will keep his options flexible and allow him to command substantial contracts in the open market. Initially, the Broncos were amenable to offering Haas a three-year deal, which he chose to decline.
The Papua New Guinea Chiefs have a significant advantage in their courtship of players, as they can offer tax-free salaries along with a clean slate and a generous salary cap of $12 million to utilize. This financial leverage could potentially lead to a record contract for Haas, possibly reaching $1.5 million annually.
Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy has acknowledged that the recruitment efforts from the PNG franchise represent a more formidable challenge than those posed by R360. "If we’re being realistic, both Perth and PNG will present a greater threat than this R360 situation," he stated.
Donaghy continued, saying, "The challenge lies in managing the salary cap effectively. Ultimately, we have to distribute resources among a talented group of athletes, and over time, difficult decisions will need to be made regarding player retention. This process is always challenging, but we are committed to investing in aspects that will make us an attractive destination for players, ensuring they want to join our club and remain with us."
