Victor Osimhen’s disciplinary issues may have cost Nigeria the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, according to Sunday Oliseh, the former captain of the Super Eagles. Oliseh argues that Osimhen's behavior not only disrupted team harmony but ultimately hindered Nigeria's chances of winning the prestigious tournament held in Morocco in 2025.
In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, Oliseh highlighted a specific incident where Osimhen publicly confronted teammate Ademola Lookman. This altercation took place during Nigeria’s impressive 4-0 Round of 16 victory over Mozambique, where Osimhen was seen scolding Lookman for failing to pass the ball during a promising attack. Such a moment of discord, according to Oliseh, shook the very foundation of camaraderie within the squad and had serious implications for their championship aspirations.
Despite Nigeria advancing to the quarter-finals with relative ease, the fallout from this incident sparked significant backlash among fans, many of whom deemed Osimhen’s actions unprofessional. Oliseh contended that the ramifications extended well beyond that particular match. He observed that Lookman’s performance noticeably declined post-altercation, which ultimately diminished Nigeria’s offensive capabilities in the semifinal round.
"Let’s examine the toxicity that may have cost us this AFCON title," Oliseh stated emphatically. "We often confuse talent with a free pass to undermine team cohesion. Victor Osimhen is undeniably a world-class player, but having talent doesn’t grant one the right to disrupt the chemistry that is vital for a team’s success."
He continued, "The evidence is clear. Ever since that public incident with Lookman, who was one of our standout players, he became a mere shadow of his former self, hindering our effectiveness on the field. When you belittle your teammates in public, you shatter their confidence. This is critical, especially in high-stakes matches like the semifinals, where we faced a tactically astute team like Morocco. We required all our top players to be firing on all cylinders."
Oliseh pointed out that statistically, Lookman had been the most threatening player in the tournament until the confrontation derailed his focus. He added, "It’s unrealistic to expect a playmaker to perform wonders when they are demoralized by their own teammate’s words. This conflict did more harm than just causing a single loss; it stripped us of the psychological edge essential for victory."
He went on to express concern about the broader fan culture that seems to tolerate such behavior. Oliseh’s criticism didn’t stop at the AFCON incident; he also referenced Osimhen’s previous public criticism of former Super Eagles coach Finidi George as another instance of unchecked arrogance that could damage the team’s integrity.
While acknowledging Osimhen's contributions to the national team, Oliseh firmly asserted that no individual should consider themselves greater than the collective effort of the squad. "Scoring goals for Nigeria does not give anyone the right to disrespect esteemed legends like Finidi George or Victor Ikpeba. Should those of us who helped elevate Nigeria's status in world football—like Amokachi, Amunike, Okocha, Babangida, and myself—arrogantly walk over others? We valued the jersey and understood that while victories can be fleeting, character endures. If we fail to address discipline and administrative issues, there might not be a Super Eagles left to support in the future."
Moreover, Oliseh criticized the celebrations that ensued after Nigeria secured third place in the tournament, celebrating a penalty win against Egypt after a 0-0 draw. He remarked, "There was a time when tears were shed for merely finishing second, because for us, anything less than the trophy was seen as a failure; celebrating third place fosters a culture of mediocrity."
