Energy Minister Lloyd Parrott has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to residents and businesses for their efforts in conserving energy over the recent weekend, which played a crucial role in avoiding potential rolling blackouts.
This situation arose due to frazil ice buildup at the Bay d’Espoir Hydro facility, which hindered power generation at the island's largest electricity generating plant. Fortunately, divers were dispatched over the weekend to clear the intakes, successfully restoring operations shortly thereafter. Following these efforts, the Power Warning was officially lifted.
Minister Parrott took a moment to acknowledge the commendable communication efforts by NL Hydro and Newfoundland Power, stating, "They did a spectacular job keeping everyone informed at ground level, ensuring that the public was well aware of the circumstances at hand."
It is worth noting that the Power Watch has now been lifted as conditions across the electrical system show signs of improvement.
"As is our standard practice, we will continue to monitor the status of our assets closely," the latest update assures, "but we are pleased to announce that we are returning to more typical operational procedures, and no action is required from customers at this time."
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
