In the bustling city of Toronto, a crossing guard has captured the hearts of many, becoming a beloved figure in the community. Khevin Enriquez, with his unique blend of duty and charisma, has earned the title of one of Canada's favorite crossing guards, and his impact is truly remarkable.
A Guardian Angel at the Crossroads
Enriquez's post is at the intersection of Bedford Road and Lowther Avenue, a mere stone's throw from two public schools. Here, he proudly takes on the role of a safety navigator, ensuring that children can cross the road with ease and a sense of security.
"This job is a blessing," Enriquez shares. "I take pride in bringing safety and a sense of calm to the kids. It's a responsibility I don't take lightly."
The Art of Connection
But what sets Enriquez apart is his ability to connect with each person he assists. "The connection is unique every time," he explains. "Some people just want to get from one point to another, and I respect that. But I try to make a positive impact, even if it's a brief interaction."
And his efforts haven't gone unnoticed. In just one year, Enriquez has made such an impression that parents from both Huron Public School and Jesse Ketchum Public School nominated him for the prestigious Canada's Favorite Crossing Guard contest.
Jonnalyn Rosal, a parent, gushes, "My kids light up when they see Enriquez in the mornings. Even on rainy days, he finds a way to bring a smile to their faces, like a rainbow in the rain."
A National Recognition
Out of the 126 nominated crossing guards, Enriquez stood out as one of only three winners across Canada, and he is the sole winner from Ontario. The other winners are from Quebec and British Columbia.
Sean Shapiro, a former Toronto police traffic officer, attended a ceremony honoring Enriquez. He described Enriquez as "a friendly reminder of what we should all strive for."
"He's the signal for drivers to do the right thing, even though they might not interact with him directly. But for those kids, he's a role model, teaching them how to navigate the streets safely every day," Shapiro added.
A Smile that Makes a Difference
The charity "Parachute" has been awarding Canada's Favorite Crossing Guard since 2005, aiming to highlight those who keep kids safe with a smile. On their website, Parachute praises Enriquez's professionalism and warmth, stating that he makes a "remarkable difference."
"Even in heavy traffic and ongoing construction, Enriquez remains calm, friendly, and attentive. He greets everyone with genuine kindness, ensuring that children, parents, and pedestrians feel safe and valued. His positive attitude lifts spirits and teaches children about safety in a memorable way," the charity wrote.
A Domino Effect of Happiness
Enriquez believes in the power of a positive start to the day. "When kids are happy crossing the streets, it sets the tone for their day at school. It's like a domino effect; a little happiness goes a long way."
During one of the coldest days of the year, Enriquez's warmth shone through. "I want to make sure everyone feels seen and included, especially on days like this."
And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the smile and the safety. It's about the impact one person can have on a community, and how a simple act of kindness can inspire and uplift others.
