A critical health advisory has been issued by Manitoba Health, urging individuals who attended Ag Days or visited specific locations in Brandon, Manitoba, to be vigilant about monitoring for measles symptoms. This comes after a suspected exposure during the event, and the agency is taking no chances.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the focus is on those who attended Ag Days, exposure notices have also been extended to individuals who visited the town of Winkler, specifically the Stacked Pancake and Breakfast House, the Boundary Trails Health Centre, and its emergency department on certain dates and times.
Manitoba Health is advising anyone who believes they may have been exposed to ensure their measles vaccinations are up to date. This is especially crucial for those born in 1970 or later who have not received the vaccination or had the infection, as they are advised to reduce exposure to others, particularly those with weakened immune systems, from the fifth to the 21st day after their latest potential exposure.
And this is the part most people miss... Initial symptoms of measles can be subtle and include a fever, runny nose, cough, drowsiness, irritability, and red eyes. Small white spots may also appear in the mouth or throat. A few days later, a distinctive red blotchy rash emerges, starting on the face and spreading downwards. These symptoms typically manifest within a window of seven to 21 days post-exposure.
If you develop any of these symptoms and suspect exposure, it's crucial to isolate at home and contact your healthcare provider, informing them of the potential risk. Remember, measles spreads through airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing, so taking precautions is essential.
