A beloved landmark, the Araluen Hotel, is up for sale, and its story is one that tugs at the heartstrings of many. This historic gem has been a cornerstone of the small town's life for nearly a century, and now it's time for a new chapter.
Reg O'Connell, a real estate manager with a personal connection to the hotel, is overseeing its sale. He's not just a professional in this scenario; he's also a guest who has fond memories of staying there. "When I was younger, we'd ride trail bikes and have an annual event. We'd end our journey at this very pub, seeking a warm shower and a hearty meal after a chilly winter's day," he reminisces.
The historic building has a rich history. It was converted into a hotel in 1928 after the original Araluen Hotel met its fiery end. "In my lifetime, there have been only a handful of owners, and they've been highly regarded by the community," O'Connell notes. The hotel is more than just a building; it's the heart of the town, a place where locals and visitors alike gather and share stories.
But here's where it gets controversial: the current owner, Norman Van Den Broek, is selling the hotel due to a change in circumstances. He purchased it in 2014, and since then, it has been a beloved hub for locals and tourists. "Every afternoon, the cockatoos come out, and the stories of the day are shared. It's a welcoming community that caters to everyone," O'Connell adds.
The hotel comes with a bar, pool tables, a jukebox, and a spacious beer garden that can seat around 60 people. There's also a commercial kitchen and an attached private residence. But that's not all; it boasts an eight megalitre water license and solar panels, making it an eco-friendly choice.
And this is the part most people miss: the hotel has a unique resident - a cockatoo, who is over 50 years old! O'Connell confirms that the bird is part of the package.
There has been a surge of interest from past guests and groups, all wanting to preserve their local pub. "Some locals are trying to rally together to buy it. I've got interested parties from the area with hospitality experience and the means to make it happen. It's a fantastic opportunity for someone to promote and continue this legacy," O'Connell says.
Previously advertised for $1.5 million, the Araluen Hotel is located at 5943 Araluen Road. Tenders are being accepted until February 28th. For more information, visit the listing.
So, what do you think? Is this a unique opportunity to own a piece of history and continue its legacy? Or is it a sign of changing times? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
