I traded in Google's core apps for open-source alternatives, and I'm never looking back. Here's why.
For years, I've been a loyal user of Google Pixel phones, primarily drawn to their excellent UI. Google's launcher is clean, intuitive, and free from the clutter of OneUI's feature bloat. But as Google's approach to integrating Gemini into its apps has become more aggressive, I've found myself seeking a more streamlined experience.
That's when I discovered the Fossify suite of apps. While not all of them are perfect, they offer a bloat-free alternative to Google's core apps, providing a Google-like experience without the excess features.
A Fresh Start with Fossify
Fossify's suite, launched in early 2024, consists of seven fully released apps and eight in open beta testing. These apps are designed to replicate the core apps that come pre-installed on your phone, but with a focus on simplicity and privacy.
The Apps in Detail
- Gallery: A photo viewer with basic editing tools.
- Voice Recorder: A simple audio recorder.
- File Manager: A file explorer for managing your phone's storage.
- Notes: A lightweight note-taking app.
- Messages: A messaging app with end-to-end encryption.
- Clock: A basic clock app without weather integration or bedtime mode.
- Phone: A simple phone dialer.
- Calculator: A calculator with no unnecessary features.
- Contacts: A contact manager.
- Keyboard: A keyboard with a clean interface and no extra widgets.
- Calendar: A calendar app without sync or online backup.
- Camera: A camera app with basic features.
- Music Player: A music player with no frills.
- Launcher: A launcher with a clean design (currently in development).
- Paint: A simple drawing app.
Why Fossify?
Fossify's apps are forks of Simple Apps' library, which prioritizes simplicity and open-source principles. They maintain the same clean UI and improved features, with a clear inspiration from Material You.
For example, Fossify Clock is a breath of fresh air compared to Google's Clock app. It lacks weather integration, bedtime mode, and screensaver, but it excels at its core function: telling the time. You can set alarms, stopwatches, and timers without any distractions.
Privacy and Security
Fossify's apps also prioritize privacy and security. They have no ads, no tracking, and are open-source. You can use them offline without any internet connection.
Additionally, Fossify's apps offer robust security features. You can secure sensitive data-storing apps (like Messages and Gallery) with a PIN, pattern, or biometric lock. You can also hide specific folders or lock photos behind individual PIN codes.
The Trade-Offs
While Fossify's apps are impressive, they aren't perfect. Some apps, like the Launcher and Voice Recorder, are inferior to Google's counterparts. For example, I've become reliant on Google Recorder's transcription feature, and Fossify Recorder lacks this functionality.
Additionally, Fossify's suite lacks key apps like an email client, weather tracker, and mapping application. These are more complex and not currently in development.
Conclusion
Fossify's apps are a great replacement for those who love Google's clean design and simplicity. They offer a bloat-free experience, prioritizing privacy and security. However, for those seeking a comprehensive suite of apps, Google's offerings remain superior.
If you're considering a switch, I recommend trying out the entire Fossify suite first to see if it meets your needs.
