B.C. Businesses Face Existential Threat: U.S. Tariffs Loom Large (2026)

The looming threat of U.S. tariffs has B.C. businesses in a state of heightened anxiety, with many fearing an existential crisis. As the Aug. 19 deadline approaches, the potential 50-per-cent tariffs on various goods, including wood products, are causing significant concern among manufacturers and exporters.

One of the most vocal advocates for the impact of these tariffs is Blaine Maryniuk, co-founder of West Coast Walls. Maryniuk's business, which specializes in wallpaper, stickers, and decals, relies heavily on the U.S. market, with 25 to 50 per cent of his sales going to the United States. He describes the situation as an "existential threat," emphasizing the daily worry it brings.

The situation has prompted intense negotiations between Canada and the U.S., with Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Chief Negotiator Janice Charette holding talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The U.S. has imposed tariffs due to perceived discrimination in Canadian policies affecting U.S. sectors like automobiles, dairy, and alcohol.

The impact on B.C.'s wood products industry is particularly concerning. Kelly Marciniw, a board member of the B.C. Log & Timber Building Industry Association, warns of potential layoffs and the strain on businesses due to increased paperwork and uncertainty. Bhavjeet Thandi, CFO of Richmond Plywood, shares similar concerns, stating that the tariffs could significantly impact his company's bottom line, as about 20 per cent of their sales go to the U.S.

The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, led by CEO Alex Mitchell, represents over 300 businesses that export to the U.S., with annual exports valued at $1.5 billion. Mitchell highlights the challenge of maintaining trading relationships in a constantly changing tariff landscape, which can disrupt long-standing business connections.

The uncertainty surrounding the tariffs has created a sense of overwhelming anxiety among businesses. Maryniuk's sentiment reflects the collective worry, as the outcome of the negotiations will significantly impact the livelihoods of countless B.C. companies and their employees.

As the deadline approaches, the fate of these businesses hangs in the balance, with the potential for widespread economic disruption in British Columbia and beyond.
