Stepping into the world of JJ Wetherholt is like opening a door to nostalgia and ambition. The promising Cardinals prospect emerges from his high school, where he's met by a couple of eager fans who have been waiting patiently for this moment.
"JJ, could you sign these for me?" one fan eagerly asks, holding out two baseball cards along with a black Sharpie in hand.
With a friendly smile, Wetherholt quickly complies, signing the items before shaking hands with the young men and heading towards his truck.
As he walks away, one of them beams, shouting, "Thanks for coming home!" clearly thrilled with his newly acquired autograph.
For Wetherholt, "home" will always be Mars, Pennsylvania—a charming borough of about 1,500 residents situated just 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. Here, time seems to slow down for the rising baseball star, who has perfected his smooth left-handed swing through countless hours of practice in this very town. Remarkably, he still finds time to train here; he has access to an indoor baseball facility that remains open around the clock.
"Coming back here really brings me down to earth," Wetherholt reflects, recalling how he spent a demanding 2025 season bouncing between Double-A Springfield, Missouri, and Triple-A Memphis, while most of his winter training took place in Jupiter, Florida. "When we first moved here when I was five, there was just one gas station. It’s so relaxed and laid-back, and it’s where my roots are planted."
This offseason, Cardinals Magazine ventured to Mars to gain deeper insights into Wetherholt's background. As a standout infielder and a first-round pick in the 2024 draft, he was named the Cardinals’ minor league player of the year in 2025. He returned to his hometown to participate in a youth baseball clinic at his high school—the same place where he once shone as a player.
If you're looking for a personalized tour of Mars, JJ is your ideal guide. He jumped into his "new" truck (which, interestingly, is actually a 2006 model) and led us to the batting cages and ballfields where he honed his skills, as well as the local golf course and fishing spots that occupied his free time. He shared stories about his first job, fond memories of his childhood dog, and even mentioned his favorite restaurants—now under new ownership.
Throughout our journey, it became evident that Wetherholt has a deep connection to Mars, and the town reciprocates that feeling, closely following his career and proudly claiming him as one of their own.
"This is where I learned everything," he says, reflecting on the significance of his hometown in shaping his journey.
