Adelaide Measles Alert: New Case Triggers Health Warnings (2026)

A recent case of measles has led to an important health warning for residents in South Australia, following an infant's visit to several locations while carrying the highly infectious virus contracted abroad.

This infant, who was diagnosed with measles after traveling overseas, visited multiple locations while still contagious. Notably, these include the Women’s and Children’s Hospital as well as the ‘St Eufemia D’Aspromonte’ Italian Festival last Sunday.

During the festival held at Flinders Park Football Club on February 1 from 2 PM to 4 PM, attendees may have been exposed to the infection. Additionally, on Wednesday, the infant was at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital SA Pathology Collection Centre from 4 PM to 4:45 PM. They also spent time in the Emergency Department of the hospital from 4:15 PM to 5:10 PM and returned briefly between 6:40 PM and 7:10 PM.

SA Health is urging individuals who have not received full immunization and were present at these locations during the specified times to stay vigilant for any symptoms in the coming weeks. If they develop signs of illness, it’s advised that they seek medical attention promptly.

According to a representative from SA Health, "The onset of measles symptoms often begins with a fever, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes, which are typically followed by a distinctive rash that usually starts on the head and spreads downwards across the body." They emphasize the importance of contacting a doctor before visiting to ensure that proper precautions are taken to prevent further spread of the disease.

SA Health has clarified that the places mentioned do not currently pose an ongoing risk of exposure. This alert comes just a day after another warning was issued regarding several sites around Adelaide after an individual with measles traveled on two trams and visited a busy swimming center on Australia Day.

Although these cases are not connected, this marks the third reported instance of measles within South Australia, with the initial case having been reported earlier last month.

As we navigate through such public health alerts, it's crucial to consider: how can communities better prepare and respond to similar outbreaks in the future? Have you or someone you know been affected by similar health warnings? Let's discuss!
